Vintage Inspiration: How the 70s Shaped My Style -

There’s something timeless about 1970s fashion. It wasn’t just a decade of bold patterns, flared silhouettes, and earthy tones; it was an era that celebrated individuality, self-expression, and a playful rebellion against the conventional.

My fascination with 70s fashion goes beyond its visual appeal. That decade represents a mindset I strive to bring into my work, one defined by freedom, experimentation, and a focus on sustainability long before it became a common concern.

Growing up, I was drawn to the textures, fabrics, and effortless layering that defined the decade. Velvet blazers, suede jackets, wide-leg pants, and bohemian prints engulfed my mom's closet and were just the beginning of my style journey. After slowly stealing my mom's clothes, I found myself experimenting with these elements in my wardrobe, adoring vintage aesthetics.

As my connection to 70s aesthetics became stronger, slowly fashion started to become one of the most important aspects of my day, so much so that I would drive endless miles to acquire the perfect addition to my wardrobe.

My obsession with curation quickly became my favorite form of self-expression. As I entered my final year of high school, I began to seriously consider what studying fashion might look like. At the same time, I had always imagined pursuing environmental science due to my deep appreciation for the natural world. Ultimately, I chose to merge these interests, deciding to study fashion alongside sustainable innovation.

My college studies have strengthened my love for vintage fashion, underscoring its role in sustainability by promoting quality, craftsmanship, conscious choices, and lasting style.

This approach continues to guide how I engage with fashion, whether I am curating a wardrobe, designing a look, or studying the industry’s evolution.

I often find myself reflecting on the way 70s fashion has quietly shaped the course of my life, guiding me toward the passions I hold closest. When I slip into some of my favorite pieces, I catch a glimpse of my mom in the mirror, a reminder that my style is a thread woven from generations past.

She nurtured my love for fashion by letting me play dress-up in her closet, and I hope to carry that same magic forward. One day, I want my future children to inherit these garments, to feel the stories stitched into their seams, and to breathe new life into them with each wear.

Vintage clothing is more than fabric; it is a vessel of memory and legacy, tracing its way through countless lives and places.

Perhaps your favorite celebrity once wore it. Sometimes, I like to imagine that Stevie Nicks herself danced through a moment in my Penny Lane coat, and in that fantasy, the spirit of these pieces full of history, whimsy, and style lives on.
